About the job

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a YouTube Graphics Fellow based in the United States.

In this creative fellowship, you will help shape how compelling news and political stories are presented to millions of viewers through impactful visual content. You will design original YouTube thumbnails and graphics that capture attention, communicate complex topics, and encourage audience engagement. Working closely with video producers, editors, designers, and social media colleagues, you will contribute to the development and testing of creative concepts, headlines, and visual storytelling strategies. You will use audience analytics, A/B testing, and emerging social media trends to refine your designs and improve content performance. This role combines graphic design, illustration, editorial judgment, and digital audience strategy in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. It is an excellent opportunity for a visually creative and politically engaged individual to strengthen their portfolio while helping make important stories more accessible to a broad audience.

Accountabilities

  • Create compelling YouTube thumbnails: Design original, high-quality thumbnails and graphics for long-form video content, using creative concepts and strong visual storytelling to capture attention and increase audience engagement.
  • Collaborate on creative development: Work closely with video producers, editors, and fellow designers to brainstorm concepts, refine visual approaches, and align graphics with editorial objectives and the subject matter of each video.
  • Optimize titles and visual messaging: Contribute to the development and refinement of video titles, graphic headlines, and on-screen text to improve discoverability, communicate key messages, and encourage viewers to engage with content.
  • Support content distribution: Help coordinate the publication of content across digital platforms, ensuring that uploads are timely and accompanied by appropriate titles, descriptions, thumbnails, alt text, and engaging copy.
  • Conduct A/B testing and performance analysis: Test alternative thumbnail designs and titles, monitor audience engagement and viewing metrics, and adjust creative approaches based on performance insights.
  • Monitor audience trends: Track YouTube analytics, audience sentiment, platform trends, and relevant developments in digital media, sharing actionable findings and recommendations with the team on a regular basis.
  • Contribute to content strategy: Identify engaging content from relevant news outlets, independent creators, and adjacent organizations that could inspire new visual approaches or improve audience engagement.
  • Support audience interaction: Help manage community engagement by responding to comments, questions, and direct messages, escalating inquiries to the appropriate team members when necessary.
  • Coordinate schedules and workflows: Collaborate with social media colleagues to maintain content calendars, organize publication schedules, and ensure graphics and related assets are delivered on time.
  • Manage assignments independently: Balance multiple creative projects, respond to evolving priorities, meet deadlines, and contribute effectively within a dynamic, fast-moving production environment.

Requirements

  • Graphic design proficiency: Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly strong proficiency in Photoshop and working knowledge of Illustrator.
  • Design tool experience: Familiarity with Canva for creating design boards, developing visual concepts, or collaborating on creative assets.
  • Relevant creative experience: Previous experience designing social media graphics, YouTube thumbnails, or other digital visual content, with a portfolio demonstrating creativity and strong visual communication skills.
  • YouTube platform knowledge: A solid understanding of YouTube's interface, audience behavior, content best practices, recommendation algorithms, and performance metrics.
  • Editorial and political awareness: A strong interest in U.S. politics, economic justice, and current affairs, alongside an understanding of how news and policy issues can be communicated through engaging visual storytelling.
  • Broad media awareness: Regular engagement with diverse news sources, including mainstream publications, independent media, and social media creators, to identify relevant stories, emerging trends, and effective creative approaches.
  • Creative and strategic thinking: The ability to translate complex subjects into clear, compelling visuals while balancing audience appeal, editorial context, and storytelling objectives.
  • Communication and collaboration: Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to exchange feedback, work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute ideas confidently.
  • Organization and attention to detail: Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments, maintain consistent quality, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Independent remote working: The ability to work productively from home, manage time effectively, take ownership of assignments, and adapt to changing priorities with minimal supervision.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly compensation: $25 per hour for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Fully remote opportunity: Work remotely from within the United States.
  • Six-month fellowship: Gain practical experience in digital journalism, visual storytelling, and audience-focused graphic design.
  • Portfolio development: Create original YouTube thumbnails and digital graphics while developing a body of work that demonstrates your creative and strategic abilities.
  • Collaborative experience: Work alongside video producers, editors, designers, and social media professionals in a multidisciplinary production environment.
  • Hands-on audience analytics experience: Develop practical skills in A/B testing, engagement optimization, and data-informed creative decision-making.
  • Editorial and creative growth: Strengthen your understanding of digital media, political communication, and visual strategies for presenting complex issues to broad audiences.
  • Mission-driven work: Contribute to content focused on working-class issues, economic justice, and public-interest journalism.
