About the job
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Android Engineer based in India.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Android Engineer to take ownership of a widely used native mobile application designed to make digital reading engaging and accessible for children. In this role, you will lead the evolution of a mature Android codebase built primarily with Kotlin, ensuring a seamless experience across smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. You will work on advanced reading features, including custom page rendering, animations, offline content, and synchronized audio experiences. You will also drive improvements in application performance, stability, architecture, and overall code quality. Collaborating closely with distributed engineering teams, you will contribute to modernization initiatives while maintaining the reliability of a live application. This is an opportunity to combine technical ownership, mobile engineering expertise, and meaningful product impact in the education technology space.
Accountabilities
- Take full ownership of the native Android application across smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks, driving ongoing development, maintenance, and technical improvements.
- Design, develop, and optimize the core digital reading experience, including custom page rendering, page-turn animations, zoom functionality, touch gestures, and synchronized Read-to-Me audio with word highlighting.
- Manage offline reading capabilities, including encrypted content downloads, local storage, background processing, and reliable content access.
- Maintain and improve Google Play Billing subscriptions and oversee the complete Play Store release process.
- Drive application performance, stability, and quality by monitoring startup times, memory usage, application crashes, ANRs, and test coverage.
- Modernize the existing codebase by progressively migrating legacy Java and RxJava components while maintaining backward compatibility and production stability.
- Introduce Jetpack Compose interfaces where appropriate, balancing modernization opportunities with the existing View-based architecture.
- Collaborate with Android, iOS, backend, and web engineers, working closely with international engineering teams to deliver product improvements.
- Contribute to testing, debugging, code reviews, and architectural decisions to maintain high engineering standards.
- Gradually expand responsibilities to include selected iOS and Swift development activities as the team's needs evolve.
Requirements
- 4–6 years of professional experience developing, maintaining, and shipping native Android applications in production environments.
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin and practical experience working with mixed Kotlin and Java codebases.
- Deep understanding of the Android View system, Fragments, and custom Views, including custom drawing, animations, and touch-event handling.
- Hands-on experience with reactive and asynchronous programming, particularly RxJava 2 in production environments and Kotlin Coroutines.
- Experience with dependency injection frameworks, MVP or MVVM architectural patterns, and networking libraries such as Retrofit and OkHttp.
- Strong knowledge of local data persistence using Room and SQLite, including database schema migrations, as well as background task management with WorkManager.
- Practical experience with Google Play Billing, Gradle build variants, application signing, continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, Google Play Console tracks, and staged releases.
- Experience implementing automated tests using JUnit, Mockito or MockK, Robolectric, and Espresso.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical professional experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills, technical ownership, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with distributed engineering teams.
Nice to have
- Experience with Android media technologies such as ExoPlayer, Media3, or MediaPlayer, particularly for synchronizing audio playback with text.
- Knowledge of encrypted media handling and secure offline content storage.
- Familiarity with Jetpack Compose and the ability to determine when it is appropriate to introduce Compose alongside an established View-based architecture.
- Experience with Android performance monitoring and debugging tools such as Perfetto, Android Studio Profilers, LeakCanary, New Relic, or Crashlytics.
- Previous experience developing children's applications, educational technology products, or working with children's privacy regulations such as COPPA.
- Interest in cross-platform mobile development and some familiarity with iOS and Swift.
Benefits
- Competitive annual compensation ranging from INR 40–50 LPA , with flexibility for exceptional candidates.
- Fully remote working arrangement based in India.
- Opportunity to take ownership of a mature, widely used native Android application.
- Exposure to challenging mobile engineering projects involving media playback, offline functionality, performance optimization, and application modernization.
- Opportunity to work with modern Android technologies, including Kotlin, Coroutines, and Jetpack Compose.
- Collaboration with an international, multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Meaningful opportunity to contribute to digital education and children's literacy through technology.
- Potential to broaden your technical expertise into iOS and Swift development.
