About the job
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Model-Based Systems Engineer based in the United States.
Take a leading role in advancing digital engineering practices across complex defense and national security programs. As a Principal Model-Based Systems Engineer, you will guide multidisciplinary teams in applying model-based systems engineering (MBSE) throughout the systems development lifecycle, from requirements analysis to deployment. You will help establish architectural integrity, improve traceability, and align engineering processes with Department of Defense digital engineering objectives. Working with experts in sensors, cybersecurity, and software development, you will develop scalable modeling approaches that support sophisticated, software-intensive systems. You will also customize and automate engineering tools to improve efficiency and consistency across programs. This remote opportunity combines technical leadership, hands-on systems architecture, and mentorship in a collaborative environment focused on solving challenging national security problems.
Accountabilities
As a Principal Model-Based Systems Engineer, you will lead the adoption and implementation of rigorous MBSE practices, helping engineering teams deliver reliable, traceable, and well-integrated system architectures aligned with defense program requirements.
•
Lead development programs through the systems engineering lifecycle using MBSE approaches that support Department of Defense digital engineering goals.
•
Architect complex systems and guide multidisciplinary teams in applying structured systems engineering methods.
•
Develop, maintain, and review SysML models using Cameo (MagicDraw) or comparable modeling tools.
•
Establish and implement rigorous MBSE practices that maintain architectural integrity and traceability from requirements analysis through system and software development to production deployment.
•
Customize and automate Cameo capabilities to support engineering workflows and enable compliance with digital engineering objectives across multiple programs.
•
Integrate model-based requirements management and traceability with software development processes, including agile approaches where appropriate.
•
Collaborate with domain experts, software engineers, and other technical stakeholders to translate program needs into effective system designs.
•
Support the adoption of open architectures and modeling practices for software-intensive systems.
•
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training to systems engineers, strengthening organizational expertise and improving modeling standards.
•
Identify opportunities to improve systems engineering practices and demonstrate the value of MBSE through practical implementation.
•
Contribute to advanced defense and national security programs involving sensors, cybersecurity, and other complex technical domains.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is an experienced systems engineering leader with a strong background in digital engineering, systems architecture, and model-based methodologies, along with the ability to guide teams through complex technical development programs.
•
Active U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance, with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance.
•
U.S. citizenship, as required for government security clearance eligibility.
•
Bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
•
At least 10 years of professional experience in systems engineering or a related field.
•
At least 5 years of experience working with SysML models in Cameo (MagicDraw) or a comparable modeling tool.
•
Experience leading technical projects or engineering teams.
•
Demonstrated experience applying MBSE methodologies to the development of Department of Defense systems.
•
Strong understanding of systems engineering processes and the full systems development lifecycle.
•
Experience working with software-intensive systems and open architectures.
•
Ability to communicate complex engineering concepts, collaborate across disciplines, and mentor less experienced engineers.
Preferred qualifications
•
Active Top Secret Security Clearance.
•
10 or more years of experience architecting systems using modeling tools.
•
Domain expertise in one or more of the following areas: radar, electronic warfare, acoustics, antenna apertures, sensor resource management, sea, air or space systems, large-scale platform test systems, cyber-physical systems, or open system architectures.
•
Familiarity with government open architecture frameworks, such as Open Mission Systems, UCI, OMS, or COARPS.
•
Proficiency in one or more high-level programming languages, including Java, C/C++, or Python.
•
Experience with agile software development methodologies.
•
Interest in advancing digital engineering practices and improving the integration of systems modeling with software development.
Benefits
•
Annual salary: $206,000–$284,000, depending on experience, education, training, critical skills, security clearance, and prevailing market and business conditions.
•
Fully remote work arrangement.
•
Opportunity to contribute to advanced research and development programs supporting defense, intelligence, and national security.
•
Collaborative, technically challenging environment with opportunities to work alongside leading experts.
•
Opportunities to mentor colleagues, share technical expertise, and help advance engineering practices.
•
Support for continuous learning and professional growth.
•
Equal employment opportunity and reasonable accommodations throughout the recruitment process.
