About the job

About Gramian

Gramian Consultancy is a boutique consultancy specializing in IT professional services and engineering talent solutions. With a strong background in software engineering and leadership, we help companies build high-performing teams by matching them with professionals who truly fit their needs.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Examiner to contribute to a specialized project focused on evaluating and improving AI capabilities in forensic science.

This role is specifically intended for professionals with genuine casework experience in firearm and toolmark examination, particularly microscopic comparison, bullet and cartridge case examination, and toolmark identification. Candidates should have practical familiarity with AFTE standards and forensic laboratory methodologies. This is not a general chemistry, biology, or laboratory science position.

You will review AI-generated responses to complex forensic scenarios, assess their scientific accuracy, and provide expert feedback to help ensure AI systems reflect accepted forensic examination practices. No previous AI experience is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review AI model benchmark answers across 10 forensic firearm and toolmark examination test cases.
  • Evaluate the scientific accuracy, completeness, and reasoning of responses involving microscopic comparative ballistics and toolmark identification.
  • Assess analyses of firing pin impressions, breech face impressions, and other cartridge case markings.
  • Examine the interpretation of bullet characteristics, rifling impressions, and related ballistic evidence.
  • Evaluate whether AI-generated conclusions align with established forensic laboratory methodologies and AFTE standards.
  • Identify technical inaccuracies, unsupported conclusions, and gaps in forensic reasoning.
  • Provide clear written and verbal feedback on model performance.
  • Document recommendations for improving AI-generated forensic assessments and technical explanations.

Requirements

  • Direct professional experience as a Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Examiner or an equivalent specialist performing firearm and toolmark examinations.

  • Demonstrated expertise in bullet and toolmark comparison, identification, and interpretation.
  • Hands-on experience examining firing pin impressions, breech face impressions, and other firearm-related toolmarks.
  • Working knowledge of AFTE standards, theory, and examination practices.
  • Familiarity with forensic laboratory procedures, documentation, and scientific reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to distinguish scientifically supported findings from unsupported interpretations.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to explain complex forensic concepts clearly.
