About the job

About Family Promise

Family Promise is the nation's leading nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending family homelessness. Through our national federated network of nearly 180 locations, Family Promise mobilizes community stakeholders to provide prevention and shelter services, housing stabilization services, and affordable permanent housing to families with children in a housing crisis.

As the organization enters its next chapter of growth and national impact, we are seeking a Chief Development Officer to lead philanthropic revenue growth, deepen donor and partner relationships, and build the team and systems needed to sustain ambitious fundraising goals.

The Opportunity

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads Family Promise National’s philanthropic growth strategy and serves on the executive leadership team. Reporting to the CEO and partnering closely with the Board of Trustees, Affiliates, and organizational leaders, the CDO sets fundraising direction, personally cultivates major donors and partners, and directs significant campaigns.

This is a growth-oriented leadership role that combines strategy with hands-on relationship building and disciplined execution. The CDO supervises the Development department (currently six staff members, with growth expected) and is accountable for departmental fundraising goals and budget, team performance, and the systems needed to support sustained revenue growth.

If you are energized by growing philanthropic support and advancing solutions to family homelessness, we would love to hear from you.

What You Will Lead and Own

Leadership and Strategy

  • Partner with the CEO and Board of Trustees to set a multi-year philanthropic growth strategy aligned with Family Promise’s mission and organizational priorities.
  • Translate strategic priorities into annual and multi-year revenue goals, investment decisions, and clear plans across fundraising channels.
  • Advise the CEO and Board on philanthropic trends, major opportunities, campaign readiness, revenue risks, and resources required to meet goals.
  • Collaborate with Programs, Finance, Affiliate Services, Policy/Advocacy, and other leaders to connect funding opportunities with program needs, outcomes, and Affiliate priorities.
  • Build an organization-wide culture of philanthropy, helping staff, Board members, and Affiliates understand their roles in relationship building and fundraising.
  • Hire, supervise, coach, and develop a high-performing Development team with clear roles, goals, and accountability.
  • Represent Family Promise National with donors, corporate and foundation leaders, Affiliates, volunteers, industry leaders, press, and other stakeholders.

Revenue Growth and Donor Relations

  • Lead an integrated philanthropic revenue portfolio spanning major and individual gifts, corporate partnerships, foundations, planned giving, sponsorships, and other appropriate sources.
  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward high-capacity donors and institutional partners, including transformational gift opportunities.
  • Expand the donor pipeline, deepen existing relationships, improve retention, and develop new markets and funding networks.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board on introductions, donor engagement, and solicitations; provide relationship plans and timely follow-up.
  • Ensure meaningful donor and partner stewardship that demonstrates impact and supports long-term relationships

Transformational Giving and Campaigns

  • Provide executive leadership for comprehensive, capital, special, and other large-scale fundraising campaigns from readiness assessment through solicitation, fulfillment, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Chief Strategy Officer to establish campaign goals, timelines, leadership structures, budgets, and gift strategies.
  • Oversee campaign prospect pipelines, gift-range strategy, solicitation plans, progress monitoring, strategic adjustments, and the accurate recording and fulfillment of pledges and donor commitments.

Development Operations and Performance

  • Lead annual and multi-year revenue forecasting and monitor results through pipeline reviews, donor data, and performance measures.
  • Oversee CRM use, data quality, gift and pledge processes, reporting, prospect management, and donor stewardship systems.
  • Develop and manage the Development expense budget with the CEO and Finance team, aligning resources with revenue priorities.
  • Evaluate fundraising results and practices regularly to improve strategy, accountability, and return on investment.
  • Maintain ethical fundraising practices and compliance with applicable laws, donor restrictions, and organizational policies.

Who You Are

You are a strategic and hands-on fundraising leader with a growth mindset, strong relationship-building skills, and a record of translating ambitious revenue goals into results. You bring sound judgment, clear communication, accountability, and the ability to work across teams and stakeholder groups.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a relevant field or CFRE credential preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive fundraising leadership experience, including substantial revenue goals, complex donor portfolios, and professional staff leadership.
  • Demonstrated success personally securing major gifts of $1 million or more and building relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Experience planning and executing a major comprehensive, capital, or other large-scale campaign, including lead-gift strategy and volunteer leadership.
  • Strong understanding of donor acquisition, stewardship, retention, prospect management, forecasting, and fundraising data systems.
  • Ability to develop budgets, exercise sound judgment with incomplete information, manage competing priorities, and follow through with high-quality work.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to make a compelling case to donors, Board members, and diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to Family Promise National’s Accessibility, Belonging, and Community priorities, reflected in leadership, decision-making, team culture, and relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues, partners, donors, stakeholders, and volunteers; strong diagnostic and solution-oriented problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience leading development at a national or similarly complex organization.
  • Experience in a federated organization with local Affiliates; comfort working with faith-based organizations and partners is expected.

Work Environment & Benefits

  • Remote, full-time exempt position; approximately 40 hours per week, varying with project demands.
  • Travel required for donor and partner meetings, Affiliate visits, and team or organizational events.  Estimated at 30%.
  • Some evening and weekend availability required for donor meetings and events.
  • Frequent interaction with staff, Board members, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to lift materials weighing up to 15 pounds may occasionally be necessary.
  • Compensation range for this role begins at $160,000
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 403(b) with match, disability, and life insurance.
  • Generous paid time off, holidays, and floating holidays.

Our Culture Commitment

We are a collaborative, mission-focused team that values bold ideas, honest conversation, and the disciplined work of turning vision into results. We are committed to an inclusive environment of belonging and community for our team and national network and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply and bring their full selves to this work.
