About the job

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Associate General Counsel based in the United States.

The Associate General Counsel will serve as a senior legal advisor and strategic partner to executive leadership, providing business-focused counsel across employment law, litigation, commercial transactions, regulatory compliance, and enterprise risk management. This leadership role combines complex legal analysis with operational decision-making to protect the organization while supporting its continued growth and mission. The successful candidate will oversee litigation strategy, manage external counsel, and guide workforce-related legal matters while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Working cross-functionally with Human Resources, Compliance, Finance, and Operations, the Associate General Counsel will help translate legal complexities into practical business solutions. The role also includes supervising legal professionals, strengthening internal processes, and improving the efficiency of the legal function. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a growing, mission-driven organization dedicated to supporting older adults and individuals with disabilities through home- and community-based services.

Accountabilities

  • Employment Law and Workforce Advisory: Provide strategic legal counsel on employment and labor matters, including employee relations, workplace investigations, disciplinary actions, leave administration, accommodations, wage and hour compliance, executive employment agreements, restrictive covenants, and separation agreements. Advise leadership on workforce restructuring, reductions in force, and evolving employment regulations.
  • Litigation and Dispute Management: Oversee the organization's litigation portfolio, develop case strategies in collaboration with executive leadership, assess claims and potential exposure, and coordinate responses to subpoenas, demand letters, administrative proceedings, and government investigations. Manage mediation, arbitration, settlement negotiations, and litigation prevention initiatives.
  • Commercial Contracts and Transactions: Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on complex commercial agreements and significant contractual commitments. Assess associated legal, financial, business, and operational risks while supporting strategic partnerships, vendor relationships, and organizational initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Risk Mitigation: Advise leadership on applicable legal and regulatory obligations, support audits and investigations, and collaborate with Compliance, Human Resources, Operations, and Finance to strengthen compliance practices. Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and recommend proactive measures to address emerging risks.
  • Legal Department Leadership: Supervise and provide strategic direction to the Privacy Officer & Corporate Counsel. Support departmental planning, workflow management, resource allocation, and the development of standardized legal templates, procedures, and processes to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Executive Advisory and Strategic Support: Serve as a trusted legal partner to senior leadership on significant business decisions, operational challenges, and enterprise risk management. Prepare legal memoranda, risk assessments, and executive briefings, and communicate clear, actionable recommendations that balance legal protection with organizational objectives.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Contribute to broader legal and operational initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education and Licensure: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Professional Experience: At least seven years of progressively responsible legal experience, with ten or more years preferred. Significant experience in employment law, litigation management, commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, and operational legal advisory work is required.
  • In-House Legal Expertise: Previous in-house counsel experience, with the ability to independently manage complex legal matters and provide practical, business-oriented guidance to executive and operational stakeholders.
  • Litigation and Contract Management: Demonstrated experience overseeing litigation strategy, managing outside counsel relationships and legal budgets, assessing legal exposure, and drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Experience supervising attorneys or legal staff, managing competing priorities, and contributing to the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of a legal department.
  • Regulatory and Industry Knowledge: Experience advising on employment regulations and broader compliance obligations. Background in healthcare, home care, or another highly regulated industry is preferred.
  • Communication and Analytical Skills: Strong legal reasoning, critical thinking, negotiation, written communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear recommendations for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Organization and Adaptability: Ability to work independently, collaborate across departments, manage multiple complex matters, and work flexible or extended hours when required.
  • Remote Work and Screening: For remote or hybrid work, candidates must have reliable internet access. The role also requires successful completion of applicable background screening.

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: Annual salary range of $160,000–$170,000.
  • Remote Work Flexibility: Remote work opportunity within the United States, subject to applicable employment requirements.
  • Health and Wellness: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, subject to position and employment eligibility.
  • Paid Time Off and Holidays: Vacation accrued at 3.07 hours per pay period, two paid floating holidays, nine paid federal holidays, and paid safe sick time accrued at one hour per 30 hours worked, subject to applicable policies.
  • Retirement and Financial Benefits: Access to a 401(k) retirement plan with a discretionary company match, potential profit-sharing for eligible employees in good standing, and an instant earnings option.
  • Insurance and Income Protection: Company-paid life insurance, supplemental life insurance, accident, critical illness and hospital coverage, and short- and long-term disability benefits.
  • Family and Personal Support: Paid parental leave, a flexible spending account, an Employee Assistance Program, and pet insurance.
  • Professional Development: Training and career development opportunities to strengthen legal expertise, leadership capabilities, and professional growth.
  • Meaningful Work: The opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on helping older adults and individuals with disabilities live independently in their homes and communities.
  • Collaborative Culture: A supportive, team-oriented environment that values integrity, collaboration, employee contributions, and long-term professional development.
