About the job

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Admissions Essay Editor based in the United States, with a fully remote, part-time freelance arrangement.

In this role, you will help students and applicants present their experiences, ambitions, and achievements through compelling, well-structured admissions essays and personal statements. You will work with candidates applying to undergraduate programs, business schools, law schools, medical schools, and graduate programs. Your expertise will help applicants clarify their ideas, strengthen their writing, and communicate their individual stories with confidence and authenticity. Working independently, you will receive editing assignments by email and manage your own schedule from anywhere in the United States. This opportunity is ideal for experienced editors and writers who value flexibility, precision, and meaningful educational impact. By providing high-quality, accessible editing support, you will help applicants navigate competitive admissions processes while preserving their unique voices and perspectives.

Accountabilities

  • Edit admissions essays and personal statements: Review and substantially improve application essays to enhance clarity, coherence, structure, and overall effectiveness while preserving each applicant's authentic voice.
  • Provide strategic writing guidance: Help applicants identify promising essay topics, develop compelling narratives, and communicate their motivations, experiences, and aspirations effectively.
  • Improve organization and readability: Restructure disorganized or overly lengthy passages, refine awkward sentences, strengthen transitions, and ensure ideas flow logically.
  • Deliver detailed editorial feedback: Offer constructive recommendations that help applicants understand how to improve their writing and make their essays more persuasive and engaging.
  • Proofread and refine final drafts: Identify grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, and inconsistencies to ensure polished, professional submissions.
  • Support applicants across academic disciplines: Edit essays for undergraduate admissions, business school, law school, medical school, and graduate-level applications.
  • Manage freelance assignments independently: Accept suitable projects, coordinate assignments received by email, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent quality standards.
  • Uphold editorial integrity: Improve applicants' own writing without writing essays on their behalf, ensuring that each submission remains authentic and reflects the applicant's personal experiences and ideas.
  • Maintain high standards of service: Deliver thoughtful, reliable, and individualized editing that supports applicants throughout the admissions process.

Requirements

  • Educational background: Must have received an education from at least one of the following five institutions: Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University, Columbia University, or Princeton University. This is a mandatory eligibility requirement, with no exceptions.
  • Strong writing and editing skills: Excellent command of written English, with the ability to improve sentence structure, grammar, clarity, tone, organization, and narrative flow.
  • Relevant editorial experience: Demonstrated ability to edit essays, personal statements, academic writing, or other substantive written materials to a high standard.
  • Analytical and critical-thinking skills: Ability to identify weaknesses in an essay's structure, argument, topic selection, and overall presentation, then recommend effective improvements.
  • Attention to detail: A meticulous approach to language, consistency, formatting, and editorial quality.
  • Respect for authentic authorship: Understanding of the distinction between editing and ghostwriting, with a commitment to helping applicants improve their own work rather than writing essays for them.
  • Independent work management: Ability to organize assignments, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain quality without close supervision.
  • Strong communication skills: Capacity to provide clear, constructive, and actionable feedback tailored to each applicant's needs.
  • Freelance flexibility: Willingness to accept assignments on a project-by-project basis and manage a variable workload according to personal availability and performance.
  • Technical readiness: Access to a computer and the ability to receive assignments and complete editing work remotely.

Benefits

  • Competitive earning potential: Historical effective hourly earnings have ranged from approximately $20 to $35 per hour , depending on the nature of the assignment and the work performed.
  • Flexible working hours: Set your own schedule and choose when to complete accepted assignments.
  • Remote work: Work from your own computer without needing to commute to an office.
  • Variable workload: Work approximately 5 to 40 hours per week, depending on your preferences, assignment availability, and the quality of your work.
  • Project-based compensation: Receive payment for each completed editing assignment you accept.
  • Professional independence: Manage your workload, editorial process, and time while working autonomously.
  • Meaningful educational impact: Help applicants strengthen their applications and communicate their stories more effectively in competitive academic admissions processes.
  • Diverse editorial experience: Work on application essays for undergraduate, business, law, medical, and graduate programs.
  • Accessible freelance opportunity: Contribute to making high-quality admissions essay guidance more accessible to applicants from different backgrounds.
